Teman Imaji; A Review

As a person who knows Mutia quite well, it's safe to presume that Teman Imaji is a grand milestone of her ultimate dream; becoming a writer (or "a person who writes", quoting Kica in Teman Imaji). She always made me fascinated by her writings, which spread around her Facebook notes, tumblr, or her blog. To have her ideas compiled in one single physical book is pretty much a felicity.

Teman Imaji is preferred to be called as 'film pecah' (I have no idea what it is called in English), rather than a novel. It is called so since Teman Imaji is constructed by series of moments that unexpectedly create a plot from start to end. Most of the contents are dialogues, some thoughtful ones. The central attention goes to Kirana Annisa (Kica), and her ordinary yet meaningful college life. Kica was born in Bogor, a so called City of Rain, grew up there, and went to Universitas Indonesia for college. Her absurd frame of thinking and affection for rain made her weird and kind of hard to make friends. But of course she eventually did, there were Adit, Banyu, Rasya, and also Faza (I am #teamFaza). In attempts of creating purpose through a confusing college life, she found love, in a form of a living imaginary friend whose weirdness compatible with hers.

Teman Imaji is a real sweet book. Mutia knows how to play with words (Dang, she really goods at it). She redefines our common understanding of many things, one of the example is about finding "the right one". I'm in awe of how she describes rain as a beauty worth cherishing. I personally never get the idea of a beautiful rain, or rain that resonances memory, or whatever. I'm just the guy who, when the rain comes, just get wet (but at least Mutia tried her best to convince me). Kica's love-story moments usually including pouring rain as a background, and I can tell that it was ... quite cute.

What will amaze you more is that Teman Imaji also has several original songs to listen to while reading its pages. Wholeheartedly composed by its very own author, Mutia herself. How awesome is that? I thought only Dewi Lestari could pull off such thing. You can check her soundcloud to listen to her dazzling songs. I know for sure she made this Teman Imaji with a heartfelt. That is what I love the most from Teman Imaji. This piece is so honest.

So yeah, read the pages of that sweet Teman Imaji, while listening to its enchanting music, with the rain pouring down outside your window, and a sip of coffe or two,

you’ll be falling in love.

p.s.: Mutia stole the name Kirana from me, since Kirana is my ..ehm.. ‘ imaginary one’. I even made a cheesy poem for Kirana in here.
